About NZ Public Data
Making NZ's public data work for you
What is this?
NZ Public Data is an independent project that turns publicly available New Zealand datasets into clear, interactive tools that help you make better decisions — from finding the cheapest power plan to checking if your rent is fair.
We cover the topics that hit your wallet and your quality of life hardest:
- Power — electricity pricing comparisons across retailers and regions
- Fuel — petrol and diesel price trends, regional differences, tax breakdown
- Grocery — supermarket price tracking and trends
- Rent — rental market data by area, income-to-rent ratios
- Health — public hospital waitlist transparency
- School — NCEA achievement data across schools
- Crime & Safety — crime statistics by area and type
⚠️ Not a Government Website
This website is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any New Zealand government agency. All data comes from publicly available sources. Our interpretations and visualisations are our own.
Why not the Government?
New Zealand government agencies publish excellent data — but it's scattered across dozens of websites, buried in PDFs, or locked behind clunky interfaces that only experts can navigate.
We believe an independent project can move faster, experiment freely, and focus entirely on what matters to you — not on what fits a ministry's reporting obligations. We pull data together from across agencies, add context, and build tools that actually answer your questions.
Our Principles
- Evidence-based — every claim links back to a verifiable public data source
- Transparent methodology — our data processing steps are documented and open
- No political agenda — we present data, not opinions
- Free and open — all tools are free to use, all visualisations are CC-BY licensed
- Actionable — we don't just show you charts, we help you make decisions
Data Sources
We use only publicly available data from sources including:
- Electricity Authority / EMI (electricity pricing)
- MBIE (fuel prices, rental bonds, market rents)
- Stats NZ / Census (demographic and income data)
- Te Whatu Ora (health system data)
- Education Counts / NZQA (school achievement)
- NZ Police / policedata.nz (crime statistics)
- Grocer.nz (supermarket pricing — public data)
